Digital Fortress Book Review | Dan Brown’s Digital Fortress Plot Summary Synopsis

The novel by Dan Brown is a thriller and revolves around a computer program named Digital Fortress. The key characters in the novel are Susan Fletcher, Trevor Strathmore, Takado, and Dave Becker. An ardent admirer of Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code; I expected the same magic in this one. But somehow I was distressed half way through the story itself.

The author gives enough hints halfway through the novel, which the reader can assemble together and get a clear picture of the mystery. As I mentioned, my expectations were in comparison with The Da Vinci Code, which the author has been unsuccesful in fulfilling.

Digital_Fortress_book_reviewThe story revolves around the National Security Agency (NSA) and a new computer counter program Digital Fortress. The NSA has a complex super computer ‘The Translator’, which is capable of breaking any codes and have a peep into the e-mails and messages passing via Internet. The NSA uses the Translator for assuring the security of the State. While this is unknown to the common man, who would protest on behalf of non-privacy and code of ethics. Meanwhile, Takado, an old associate of NSA, who was expelled, comes up with an algorithm which is capable of generating codes, which even the Translator cannot break. This throws up the NSA in deep trouble. So Trevor Strathmore is very keen on getting hold of the key, which Takado announces can unlock the Digital Fortress. Meanwhile, Takado passes away unexpectedly, the key is in the wrong hands, and unknown people are behind the key. The further story reveals as to how the NSA achieves the key, breaks the code, and brings to light the people behind the key.

The plot was intriguing but the supporting facts were weaks. Some hints were too easy. For example, the final part, finding the key to the Digital Fortess, was too simple. A reader can easily guess the answer. Even the villian was revealed too early in the novel.

Overall not a wonderful work from Dan Brown!
